Emma Watson Went on a Silent Retreat Amid "Horrendous" Split
Strong and silent. Vogue UK describes Emma Watson as the “voice of a generation” — but as the Harry Potter star learned toward the end of her relationship with Matthew Janney, sometimes words are better left unspoken.
In an interview for the September issue of the magazine, which features Watson, 25, in a white and gold jacquard Stella McCartney dress on the cover, the UN Goodwill Ambassador recalled her breakup from Janney last December, describing it as a “horrendous” time.
It was so terrible, in fact, that the actress took a weeklong vow of silence amid the drama.
“I felt really uncomfortable,” she shared, “even before my relationship ended, I went on a silent retreat, because I really wanted to figure out how to be at home with myself.”

As previously reported, Watson and Janney — who played rugby at Oxford University — split after almost a year of dating last winter. “It was a mutual decision,” a source told Us Weekly at the time.
Save for some false rumors about a secret romance with Prince Harry, the Colonia Dignidad star hasn’t been linked publicly with anyone since. But she balked at the Vogue interviewer’s suggestion that her star power might intimidate potential suitors.
“The boyfriends or partners I’ve had have generally made me feel really cherished,” she told the mag. “They’ve built me up. I certainly haven’t found that with doing all that I do or being all that I am, that I’ve struggled in my love life. I just think it’s very patronizing towards men. It undermines them.”
