Publish date: 2024-03-16

Prince William has embarked on a solo four-day visit to Kuwait and Oman, where he will represent Great Britain. This marks the first time that the Duke of Cambridge has visited both countries, and he follows in the footsteps of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and his father, Prince Charles, who made previous trips to Kuwait.

He arrived Sunday night at the Kuwait International Airport, where he met the Minister of the Amiri Diwan (Royal Palace) Affairs, Sheikh Ali al-Jarrah al-Sabah, according to USA Today. On Monday, the Prince visited the al Jahra Nature Reserve outside Kuwait City.

The queen's first and only visit to Kuwait occurred in 1979, according to Arab Times. She was accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip.

Prince Charles visited Kuwait in 1989 with Princess Diana during a royal tour of the Persian Gulf. The Prince of Wales has since visited the country again, making the subsequent trip with his current wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

According to ITV, Kensington Palace said of Prince William's visit, "Throughout the tour, the duke's programme will pay tribute to the historic ties Britain shares with Kuwait and Oman, and will highlight strong links and cooperation in many areas, including education, the environment, and defence. From the modern capitals of Kuwait City and Muscat, to the vast Kuwaiti deserts and stunning wadis in the Omani mountains, the visit will take in both countries' unique cultures, their beautiful landscapes, and diverse communities."
