The Lucasian professor was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, England. His father was Frank Hawking, who studied medicine at Oxford University and later worked as a medical researcher. His mother studied philosophy, physics and economics at the same university as his father. She later got a job as a secretary at a medical research institute. Hawking’s siblings include two younger sisters. Philippa, Mary and an adoptive brother named Edward Frank David.
In 1950 his family moved to St Albans, Hertfordshire following his father’s promotion to Head of the Parasitology Unit at the National Institute for Medical Research. There Hawking completed his undergraduate education at the Radlett School and St. Albans School. He earned a first class degree in Physics from the University of Oxford and continued his studies at the University of Cambridge where he received his MA and Ph.D. graduated degrees in cosmology.
A renowned physicist and cosmologist, he wrote down his innovative ideas, theories and formulas in a number of books including A Brief History of Time, Blackholes and Baby Universes and Other Essays, The Universe in Brief, God Created the Integers: The Mathematical Breakthroughs , which among other things changed history .

While still a student, Stephen Hawking met his now ex-wife; Jane Wilde at a New Year’s party in 1963 shortly before being diagnosed with motor neuron disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The couple became engaged in October 1964 and exchanged vows the following year.
Soon after, the couple welcomed their first child, Robert, in May 1967. Three years later, Jane gave birth to their daughter, Lucy, and their third child, Timothy, was born in April 1979. Jane had met Jonathan Hellyer in 1977 and fell in love with him, but still wanted to remain married to Hawking. His illness had severely affected their marriage.
A few years later, Hawking began developing romantic feelings for one of the nurses who takes care of him, named Elaine Maison. Shortly thereafter he left Jane and his family to Maison. In 1995, he signed Jane’s divorce papers while also celebrating his union with Maison. He then isolated his family with Jane from his life until 2006, when he was separated from Maison and reconciled with his family and Jane, who had remarried herself.

Diagnosed with the early stage in 1963, Stephen Hawking suffered from motor neuron disease and his health gradually deteriorated until he became paralyzed and unable to speak or walk over the years. However, he was able to communicate using a speech generator, which has been heavily modified over the years to adapt to each new low his disability dropped to. Hawking battled the disease for over 5 decades and died on March 14, 2018 when he was 76 years old.
